About this programme

Handel is the ideal composer for young voices, with many opportunities for those just beginning, and wonderful choruses that come to life when sung wiht the enthusiasm and vigor of young artists who are singing them for the first time. Theodora is an oratorio that came at the end of Handel's long creative life and he considered much of the music to be his finest. It is a highly dramatic work that has recently enjoyed great success when staged.

The Creakes International Opera Ensemble and Baroque Sinfonia comprises some of the most promising young musicians in Europe, drawn from the major music conservatoires and universities. The opera performances conclude a short period of intensive training at the hightest possible level, designed to give opportunities for promising artists to explore new ground, sometimes including those who are still at school. The experience is unique in achieving so much in such a short period - there are always some performers who have never been on stage before.

Adam Johnson follows a line of talented musicians who have made their full-length operatic conducting debut in South Creake. A versatile composer and recital pianist, he has formed the Northern Lights Orchestra which successfully made its first appearance in London last November. Adam is no stranger to the Trust and helped with last year's opera course. In another capacity, his work as a solo pianist on cruise ships has taken him round the world.

Jennifer Hamilton has directed all the South Creake operas and is resident in the village. Her work in schools and the local community has brought a new dimension to music and drama in the region. Her productions in Manchester have won a number of prestigious national awards and she currently teaches not only in Norfolk, but also in Ireland, Scotland and overseas when time permits.

A Handelian Buffet will be served in the Trust's Old Chapel after the performances for just £18.50 (excluding wine). Handel was something of a bon viveur and entertained regularly at his home in Brooke Street in London. He was, however, known to enjoy a superior bottle or two in the kitchen whilst serving his guests a vin ordinaire! International chef Robert McNaughtan's Handelian Buffet recreates a few dishes that Handel might have offered had we been invited to his table.

Menu Coarse pork and liver pate; cold chicken and leek pie; potten salmon; assorted salads of the period; either cheese or dessert, Trinity College burnt cream; summer pudding; lemon pie. Fully licensed bar available.
